Index Number: 8643 [This is from the Silent Talk Conference] Hello Shay..... Here in Tucson Arizona we have an organization called Handidogs which trains dogs for people with disabilities and hearing impairments. The hearing ear dogs are trained for many things such as alerting the owner to someone at the door, the alarm clock going off in the morning, the phone ringing - those kinds of things. They can also be taught to bring the phone receiver to you when the phone rings (or you request the dog do it), they will respond to hand signals, they can also be taught to do things like carrying objects for you, picking up objects that have been dropped by you or have fallen and you can't pick them up, and they can be taught specialty chores that you may need. Of course they are taught basic obedience too. My dog is trained as a handidog (not a hearing ear dog) and she has been my saving grace, especially over the past 10 months while I have been pretty incapacitated. If the dog gets certified then she is allowed to go everywhere with you - like a seeing eye dog. I have allowed my dog to sniff something (like a shoe) and told her to go get the other one and she has found it and brought it to me... this is something I taught her. Oh, another thing she does is carry the empty toilet paper roll to the kitchen pail for me. She thinks that's the best thing she can do - she loves to please me and loves when company comes over so she can show off and go through her paces. ha ha ha Hope that helps.
