"no weakening amendments". We're all in big big trouble now. We have no
ri]ht to participate without modification. If a blind person wants to
stay in a hotel and there are only a certain number of "handicapped
rooms", they will say, "you can't stay here, there are no handicapped
rooms available". We should have left well enough alonne. Now we're in
for it, just wait and see.

Darrell, I don't agree with you here and besides, who has ever
heard of "handicapped rooms" in a hotel/motel? I believe most hotels
are adapting their rooms for ALL, not specifically the disabled.
From what I've seen as well as been informed, the Holiday Inn and
Marriott hotels have modified their rooms for some years.

Perhaps you might want to share with us why you think we should

have left things alone. I'm interested in why you feel this way.

There is nothing in the ADA that forces anyone to use an accessable
room, nor does it allow a hotel to turn a blind person away because an
accessable room wasn't available. Not necessarily you Darrel, but it
is clear to me there are a lot of folks saying "the sky is falling" who
haven't bothered to LOOK UP at the sky to check! Come on guys let's do
some research.

Hello Ann..... I hate to tell you this but - motels/hotels have rooms
for handicapped customers. I have availed myself of their use many
times. Usually the bathroom is the major difference - some have roll
in showers for wheelchair accessibility, some have hooks in the ceiling
for a trapeze (hmmmmmm, sounds kinky to me - hee hee), wider doors,
easier access to the beds etc, etc. AND they are on the first floor
for obvious reasons (including ease of escape incase of fire). If you
call some local ones and ask them if they have special rooms most of
them will probably say yes... Actually, I would be surprised if they
said no.

You might also check with the local Chamber of Commerce or Visitor
Information Center to see if there is a published list of
motels/hotels offering adapted rooms. Here in Virginia Beach the
Mayor's Committee for the Disabled compiled a list a few years ago
and are in the process of doing the same for restaurants and
updating their list. I am in the process of typing it all out and
posting it on my BBS as a bulletin for handicapped visitors to our
area.

I was reading your message to Ann about hotels/motels having units
for the disabled. Are you only talking about the states? Do you
know if Canadian hotels/motels have units for the disabled too?
