Index Number: 9011 Modem Madness Rehab Center [314-343-9736] - Node 3454 Name: Dan Garrison I am posting from Modem Madness Rehabilitation Center (that is a BBS, not a hospital or therapy center--although some of its users may disagree with the last statement). I have browsed some of the messages here and I do not know for sure where to fit in. I am used to BBSing in WWIV and getting to FIDO net is somewhat different. I am employed as a computer programmer here in St. Louis and I am a Polio Survivor. I use an Amigo wheelchair at work and other places to get around as my polio left me with severe respitory weakness. I also use a ventilator at night when I sleep. Here in St. Louis we have had some good BBS discussions between non-disabled and disabled in a way of sharing and talking. I think it has been very good. One thing I am noticing today, even though my employer seems to have a very positive attitude about hiring. Our medical insurance opportunities include some HMO's. I am in one because it does not discriminate against "previous health" issues. But, I am finding that although my policy will pay for new "durable" medical equipment, it will not pay for maintenance and upkeep on existing durable medical equipment. In other words, even though my company apparently values the good work I do as a computer programmer, if my wheelchair breaks down, or if my ventilator needs work, it will be out of my pocket to take care of it. I am aware that if I were unemployed and benefitting from Medicare, that such expenses would be covered. I have no desire to become unemployed for such a "benefit". But, it would seem to me that if disabled are to truly become a productive work force, as I am sure that we can be, that more effort should be made to meet this type of need which we have. Just two cents worth of thought. CHEERS!!! -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!100!365.0!N3454.U33 Internet: N3454.U33@p0.f365.n100.z1.fidonet.org
