Sorry I posted the whole message Unfortunately there are people whose disabilities are such that they cannot take charge of their lives. There are people with mental retardation whose level of functioning is quite low and who except in very limited areas cannot take charge of their own lives, the same is true of some people who are mentally ill or who suffer from dementia. Some with help will be able to take charge of more areas of their lives or completely do so,but there are those who cannot and though they may learn to function on a higher level will never reach the stage where they can take charge. There are people who have no problem in providing needed services for people with disabilities even when it includes feeding, dealing with incontinence, etc. In hospitals and nursing homes there are health aides who do this. Of course there are many who do not want to do this type of work, but there are many who do not want to teach, drive a cab, be a salesclerk, do garden work etc., etc. Anyone whohires someone to work for them wether it involves intimate personal care, housekeeping, gardening, baby sitting etc. has to know how to be in charge, and manage effectively. these are skills that have to be learned wether you are a person witha disability or not. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!109!304!Floria.Antin Internet: Floria.Antin@f304.n109.z1.fidonet.org

But someone must survey the advocates and ensure that the client receives the services of the advocate and not the agency. VR is one agency who hires advocates for the retarded. That is like the fox paying another fox to guard the chickens. In the end the client gets eaten by both foxes. Each successful manager needs to have a self-esteem which allows him to assume a leadership role.
