 >The concept of "empowering the individual" seems like a positive
 >one. I don't see it being practiced very much in the rehab
 >community here, though I believe the independent living centers
 >are an attempt to implement that idea. That movement is growing
 >but the change is slow.

The knowhow for this is still being researched. You might
remember "Sesame Street" TV show, designed to increase the
literacy rate of negro children.

Ok - so now we have some black people being more than slum
dwellers. But there is still much more distance to go.

In the area of "Womeen's Liberation", Disability Liberation", ...
these areas are even more backward than negor-liberation. We can
look at what things did and what did not work - with negros,
women, disabled people, etc.

>From these comparisons, we can then try to devise something that
might empower other disadvantaged people.

I do know of things that WILL NOT WORK. It is much easier to be
negative than have blind faith in the overwhelming possiblities
that are still untested.

On the few things that DO WORK, we need more discussion. I've
mentioned 20 - 30 of these strategies in the months that I've
been in this conference. But the overall message that I'm
getting is that this conference, as a whole, is not interested in
changing the way things are right now.
