Another note on doings out here in Seattle....

Was flipping thru the TV channels and noted that on one of the community
access channels, a program moderated by the head of the WSAD (Wash.
State Assn of the Deaf) was almost completely signed, with a voice
over. The program was put together by a University of Washington
professor, I believe, and acted by a contingent of hearing impaired
thoughout the state.

It was a full hour, no commercials, and dealt with a variety of problems
that people young and old, hearing and non-hearing, face. A couple
of examples: one short pgm was about a deaf student who had, unknown
to him, dyslexia, which is a disorder that causes people to reverse
and invert (I think) letters. The end result is the person with the
disorder has difficulty reading. Another short program dealt with
a man who was an alcoholic; yet another program showed a woman who
, in her thirties, was dealing with a hearing loss, after having grown

up hearing.

Each short program of about ten minutes was followed by a panel discussion
of what was shown. It was well put together, though I wish the program
about the woman with hearing loss had been captioned. That whole
short program was voice only. All in all, it was nice to see. Like
other things though, it could have been better publicized. I had
seen some of the people in the program just a few days before it was
shown, yet none indicated it would be on TV, nor that it had even
been produced.

The WSAD convention could have been better advertised also. One woman
was upset because so few young people were there. It basically came
down to little publicity about the event. Again, that is part of
the reason Debbie Salo and I started up the bulletin board system,
SHI-BBS.

Time to go...any comments on how we can get the word spread about
events? Drop me a note....till later...GG

Gerry, was the program not captioned? I hate it when shows that
deal with hearing impairment are only in sign because not all HI
folks can sign.

I recall two years ago when there was a local special dealing with
human interest here in Lawton was shown in sign only and I protested
afterwards and they assured me that next time it would be captioned.
This show was not advertised, so many folks missed it.

At the SHHH Convention last week, I chatted briefly with a Larry
Goldberg who is in charge of The Caption Center in Boston, MA. He
was most helpful and informed me to keep at our local station about
captioning the local news. He also gave me LOADS of information
as well as stated he would contact them if needed

It takes us to convince those who take things for granted what needs
to be done. If you need contact information on this subject matter,
let me know and I'll send you some phone numbers and addresses.

Also, perhaps you and Debbie will consider attending the SHHH convention
in Denver next year. Several of us who attended this year are going
to try to give a workshop dealing with telecommunication using CPUs.

Hello Gerry,

In regards to your recent posting about the TV program I'm taking
the liberty of making a few suggestions.

1. Do write and thank the appropriate TV station for showing the
program. Then point out that not every viewer is able to hear
and understand the voice and/or sign interpreting. Ask that
if they show a similar program in the future that it be
    closed captioned.

2. Do the same as in #1, but to the University of Washington
professor, and to the moderator, (Washington State Association
of the Deaf). And then add a comment about communications
accessibility. Also, volunteer to assist and advise
them if they have any questions. Explain that you are
involved with a BBS and the SilentTalk echo, and can help
them in future advertising of such program. You might also
advise them to contact SHHH (Self Help for Hard of Hearing
People, Inc.), 7800 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland 20814,
301-657-2248 Voice and 301-657-2249 TDD for possible assistance.

3. Another possible source of spreading the word would be to contact
Audiologists, Hearing Aid dispensers, and Otolaryngologist. Also
SHHH Chapter(s) and group(s) are a good place to "pass the word".

The above suggestions might be a starting place for you. And I'm sure
some of the other SilentTalker's will have other suggestions.

                                            Wayne

Hi, I think I will jump in and introduce myself. I am hearing impaired
and and sight really in one eye (the right one) and the left eye can
see only light and dark. I was born hearing impaired and with a cataract
in my left eye leading to surgery on eye and also on heart soon after
birth. I have heart murmur due to heart problem right after birth
which I became blue. I was raised in Duluth, Minn. most of my life
and moved to Seattle in 1977 to attend Seattle Central Community College.
Yeah, I missed going to SHHH convention. Ann was telling me aobut
that some time ago. Apparently, plans did not work out that way for
me to go to LR. Since it is in Denver, I will try to make it next
year. I have parents and some friends in Colorado. My parents live
in Colorado Springs. Well, I have this on calendar and hope to meet
you Ann and the others too! Oh, I have some hearing and can communicate
with hearing people but my life centers with the deaf and I sign.
Ahhh, now I am not a silent reader. <grin>.
