Index Number: 9113 [This is from the Silent Talk Conference] Here is the news all you fast food junkies have been waiting for. Shhh Journal reports that Burger King and McDs are making drive-thru changes that may help us H-I folks. The Whopper Shops are testing two-way color TV monitors that will enable us to actually see the unintelligible mumbler taking our order. Best of all, the order will be displayed on the screen for verification. McDs is putting wireless headsets on their mumblers, for whatever that may be worth. ... Boy, sometimes is frustrating ordering a meal or just a drink from a drive thru at McDonalds. This BK carries special paper menus where you check off what you want, indicating whatever you want on your selections (veggies, condiments, etc). Although it would be really nice if they had at least one order person who signed, I have to believe that this is a step in the right direction. The printing on the forms indicate that this is a special menu for the hearing impaired and is printed by BK corporate .... not a local effort. It seems to me that ANY BK should be able to order these, and have them on hand if they do a large business with H/I persons. At the same time, a blind friend of mine bemoans the fact that almost NO fast food restaurants carry braille menus on hand. All they would really need to do is produce ONE for each restaurant on plastic or aluminum....they would last practically forever, and could just be kept at the counter. ....Rick -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!101!165!Rick.Giguere Internet: Rick.Giguere@f165.n101.z1.fidonet.org

Anyone have a listing of addresses for Burger King, McDonald's, Ralston-Purena (Jack in the Box), etc? If you can get and post the addresses, we could stick it in the bulletins on our BBS's and ask users to write to these people and request them. Look at what happened when they posted that thing about the kid in England who wanted to get in the Guiness Record Book for receiving the most get well cards. (Over 16 MILLION cards) Opus 0.00 and 1.00 brought in over $50,000 for the Shanti project and the terms for Opus are very, very lax. I'm not totally blind but I carry a white cane and have been handed the braille menu several times (I have to explain I can't read braille. I wish the local McD's didn't have the lighted overhead menu with white letters on light yellow background - there just isn't enough contrast to read it eaisly.) -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!129!26!Stu.Turk Internet: Stu.Turk@f26.n129.z1.fidonet.org

Even going inside doesn't help that much. You tell them what you want, then they look down at their register and mumble something at you. I think they reject any potential employees who are capable of articulate speech. Either that, or make the ones who can speak clearly work in the kitchen. AS> I hope Wendy's decides to follow McD's and BK along with many Wendy's always seems to do that, Annie. Recall the "Where's the beef" commercial, where they poked fun at the competition's big buns.
