Tom,

A power failure alarm would be fairly simple to make, and I suspect
it would allow you to sleep better than you have in a long time.

An alarm consists of a 12 volt beeper, nine volt battery, 110 volt
normally closed relay and a length of lamp cord and plug. The contacts on
the relay are used to close the nine volt circuit. The lamp cord is
attached to the relay coil and plugged into a wall outlet. As long as
voltage flows through the relay coil, the contacts are held open and all
is serene. But should the power fail the contacts close causing the
beeper to sound similar to most electronic alarm clocks.

Everything you need for this can be found at any Radio Shack store
including a plastic box to put it in. If you don't feel competent to rig
it get on the local bbs and find a message area where ham radio operators
or computer hobbyist hang out. If all else fails let me know and I will
build one and send it to you.

All The Best,
