A North Carolina man has passed the halfway mark in an attempt to become
the first blind man to walk the 2,143 mile Appalachian Trail. Since he
left Georgia on March 9, Bill Irwin has trekked more than 1,200 miles over
some of the roughest terrain in the East. He plans to reach Mount Katahdin
in Maine, the Northern end of the trail, by early October. Mr. Irwin, 49,
is hiking with his guide dog, Orient. He started to cross the rocky 229.8
miles of the trail in Pennsylvania 3 1/2 weeks ago. The Christian
counselor says the hike is a way of showing people the power of faith.
