Index Number: 9637 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] I have uploaded to Wili's board in Pittsburgh a demo disk of the Reader Project: an electronic bookstore (so they claim) for blind persons. I am not entirely clear on how it works except that they will sell you the necessary decoding hardware and software which attaches to a PC. You receive the books via modem. The hardware/software will soon be sold in beta version for something like #300; regular price is $500. After that, you pay for the cost of the inkprint book which you can download to your computer and read with the special software included in the package. The reader project, inc. is in Washington, DC. They call themselves an electronic bookstore for the bline and apparently intend to make literature of all kinds available in a much more timely way than other sources. Just how many titles they currently have or whether they plan to stay in business long enough for users to recoup the upfront cost is I think still a big question mark. The demo disk is sort of neat, though! Download it and try it. I will also upload the disk to Al's board Darkness III in the DC area as soon as possible. The Reader Project automated information number is 1-800-321-8398. Scott ...
