Computers are big in rehab - seems like an excellent way to introduce newly disabled people to computers would be to have echoes such as ours available. *adh* -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!261!1000!Alan.Hess Internet: Alan.Hess@f1000.n261.z1.fidonet.org

By that time I should have at least three here in NE Ohio active, and with letters of support from them, copies of radio talk shows, a brochure we're putting together, and a couple of possible block buster suprises, it should make a convincing story. So, hang in there.... assistance is on the way. ~ Via ProEdit 3.2R -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!157!3!Butch.Walker Internet: Butch.Walker@f3.n157.z1.fidonet.org

AH> Computers are big in rehab - seems like an excellent way to AH> introduce newly disabled people to AH> computers would be to have echoes such as ours available. A letter the the O.T. department might get it started. Maybe we could split the list of Rehab centers and each of us send 10 letters with the number of the nearest BBSs. That way it would only take about 6-9 of us to cover all the rehab centers in the country. -=joe=- -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!150!140!Joe.Chamberlain Internet: Joe.Chamberlain@f140.n150.z1.fidonet.org

I am an OT in private MN> practice, working almost extensively with assistive tech. BRAVO for your MN> idea of using OT's and rehab enters et al to participate in the echo's. I Thank you. I have always thought that the O.T. department has a great effect on what the newly disabled feel free to undertake when they are released. If a first contact with computers can be established before discharge then it is likely it will be pursued. I am interest in you ideas of the nursing homes. The elderly are a greatly neglected segment of the society. Their was a group in California and then Eldernet in Philadelphia. I don't think either got off the ground. -=joe=- -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!150!140!Joe.Chamberlain Internet: Joe.Chamberlain@f140.n150.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 9664 [This is from the Spinal Injury Conference] I am finding the use of computers with nursing home patients to be one of the most exciting things I've ever done as an OT. We have an Apple IIGS system with lots of peripherals and an Adaptive Firmware Card. We just started the computer program in August 89. In October, we will be presenting a seminar in Hawaii on using tech. in this type of setting. Needless to say, a year does not make one an expert by any means. I am finding good results with patients with strokes and other neurological disorders. These are not traditional rehab patients - they are the ones for whom "traditional" therapy is not/didnot work. We work on visual perceptual skills (using the Touch Window a lot) and on simple cause and effect. From there, we work towards low tech communication boards and systems. I am also using the computer to "teach" daily living skills...I wish I knew some other OT's in SC who even had a slight interest in technology. Just returned from a conference in Conn. where there were many OTs and PTs with interest in computers. On well, things will change... I am interested in ideas and suggestions of others. One project now is to try to get the nursing home on line so patients and families can take advantage of the support areas. We have a modem, but no $$. Sounds familiar, I'm sure.
