BK> the exhibits. By the way, do you know how easy it is to import
BK> files in to Word Perfect? Anyone reading this, please feel free
 BK> to answer. Bill K.

Bill,
What kind of files, and what version of Word Perfect?

Basically you have two options...Shift F-10 to import other Word Perfect
files made with the same version you are running, and Control F-5 that
brings up a menu that allows you to import or save ASCII files, etc.,
and in previous Word Perfect version format if you are running 5.0 or
5.1.

TG> What version of Wordperfect are you using. I just got 5.1 and
TG> I am using the work book from 5.0 to learn the program. I am
TG> using Artic speech and wondered if there are any wp.Cfg files
TG> out there that I could use.

Tom,
Actually, I tutor a secretary who has 5.0, another person who has
4.2, and I bought 4.1 while I was a student so that's what I use at
home!
The person with the 5.0 does use Artic as her speech program, but
trust me, she doesn't have her speech configured worth a darn for the
program, and I too would like a little help in getting her set up
better.
Any of you Artic users able to give Tom and me a hand?
                                                        Willie

Hi Tom:

I'll upload to Wili's board the two files. I suppose that
technically
I should send it to you in a private message since it may be illegal
to distribute an artic .cfg file. Hopefully, they wouldn't care
because you couldn't use it without the executable program. So,
forgive me Lord! I'll put it on my confessional list! <grin> Now, if
that's all I had to worry about!

RFB has recorded the workbook for v5.0: not 5.1. Do you have the 5.1
workbook? Also, you might want to know that RFB has already recorded
the Wordperfect V5.1 instant Reference book (but they screwed up on
the tone indexing -- every page instead of each command entry). They
are also in the process of recording the book WP 5.1 Templates and
Macros. That's the big $40 volume which comes with a couple of macro
disks.

Talk with you soon.
Scott

PS. RFB has about thiry WP books in all for various versions of the
program. Check with the reference library staff at RFB. They are
nice people.

If the files you get with a program are ASCII files then you use the TEXT IN
feature of Word Perfect. Most read.me files and .doc files I have encountered
are text or ASCII files. So you can just TEXT IN the file into Word Perfect.
I know there is a "TEXT IN" choice off the LIST FILES (F5) function key
in Word Perfect 4.2. There is also another function key that allows you
to bring in an ASCII file. (But I can't remember which function key, if you
use the HELP key (F3) and press T (for text) there will be columns displayed
which tell you which function key is TEXT IN.) In WP 5.0 it is the CTRL F5
function key. Just make sure and set your margins wide because most ASCII
text figures use about 80 columns, and WP figures you're in an office
environment and will want 1 inch margins. So things get "jumbled" if you don't.

You mention porting your catalog files from the Eureka to your clone. What is
the Eureka and are you going to read your catalog files in Word Perfect or
use them elsewhere? If they are straight ASCII files, no problem getting them
from one place to the other and using them. If they are files created by some
database program, and the Eureka is not an MSDOS machine, then whatever program
that you are using on your clone needs to have the same file structure as the
program that ran on the Eureka.

Word Perfect runs on several kinds of machines, and saves its files in the same
manner on all machines, that way it is possible to port WP documents to any
kind of machine and use them without losing any of WPs features, like tabs,
indents, line spacing, etc.

Hope I answered at least one of your questions,
jamie

BK> Hey, speaking of wordperf, how did you set the window so it
BK> would talk to you? That's the one thing I noticed, it doesn't
BK> do much talking to me. However, the arrow keys do just fine,

Bill,
Yeah, that is how most word processors behave with speech, as they
typically write direct to the screen.
Ok, you're using Flipper, right? Well, you have 2 fairly easy
options available to you if you want the prompts to talk. First of all,
and I'm sure you will find this to be too much chatter once you are
comfortable with Word Perfect, you can cause it to write through the
bios by entering it with the command WP/NF rather than just the WP. You
will then either have to silence the status line with a quiet window, or
toggle off "automatic output" with a F-1 in screen review whenever you
start to type your document.
A simplier, but less talky method, is to turn on "extended
automatic output" in Flipper with an alt F-1 in screen review. This
will cause most of the prompts, such as "exit WP ? Y/N" to be spoken
without interfering in any other way. It won't speak the entire help
screens or the entire menu when one is presented, but it will read the
basic prompts automatically.
     Good luck,
                                                        Willie
