I'm using Procomm Plus version 1B with the Verbal Operating System from
Computer Conversations with an internal Votalker board on a Leading
Edge Model D running DOS 3.10. Here's the problem: I've set Procomm
plus up so that the snow removal is on. That means it's running fine
except that when I try to upload or download files, the information
regarding the upload isn't spoken. Is it because VOS isn't cutting it?
Big possibility. I'd just like to be able to hear the block and error
counts again like I did under Procomm 2.4.2. But I'm not willing to go
back to version 2.4.2 unless I really have to. Is there anyone out
there who has used VOS with Procomm Plus who would be willing to talk me
through this? Call me here at ACB by voice at (800) 424-8666 weekday
afternoons or leave me a message here. I'd really appreciate any help
anyone might offer. I'm tired of the guessing game when it comes to
uploads and downloads. It's either time to fix this, change
communications software or get a different speech software system.
There has to be someone out there who has faced this. By the way, I'm
using a 10-function key keyboard. I encountered a problem on the
12-function key keyboard which was fixed with a utility I downloaded
from Data Storm's BBS which makes an extended keyboard look like a
regular one to Procomm Plus. I don't think that utility'll make any
difference here. Somebody--Somewhere--please help!

No, because snow removal does not make it write through the bios.
It does make it talk better than no snow removal. In order to get
what you want, with vos, you would have to have it write to the
bios. If you have a screen reader that will monitor a line then
you could make it talk to you. Now, why would you want to hear the
block and error count? This would slow down your file transfer,
and of course on long distance that would be more costly.

One more thing you can do, however, is to find out what line this
information is coming on, and stay in review mode, and
occasionally read that line, and find out, but again this will slow
down the file transfer, but not as bad as constantly getting the
information.

Nolan,

I tried calling you at the number you listed, but got a partial
recording. In refference to your question about procomm plus, the
change you made to the snow removal does cause incoming data to use
bios and should speak as it currently does for you. However, any
screen writing that pcplus does itself to the screen is still using
direct screen writes and will not talk interactively. I don't
think vos is your problem. The same would happen with any screen
reader. If you want everything to talk, including file transfers,
and don't want to go back to procomm v2.42, I strongly suggest you
try Telix and configure it to use bios. It does have a switch you
can use on the command line to force this or you can set it from
the configuration menu. If you have Telix set to use bios for
screen writing, everything will talk including menus, incoming
data, and file transfers. It also occurs to me that vos does have
a way of monitoring a predefined window. Perhaps you could set up
a window that would cover just the very small area on your screen
that shows the progress of the transfer like say the block count or
byte count. If vos does have such an ability, then you should get
a talking window that will speak every time that window changes.
Depending on how vos handles this type of window, there may be a
fair possibility however that this method might interfere with your
transfers. Hope this help somewhat...

Regards, Rick
