I was reading the paper yesterday and I saw an article about a 12
year old blind girl who is a barrel racer. It said she started
riding in pleasure classes where she was judged on her ability to
make the horse walk, trot, and lope on command. Before long she
picked up on her mother's enthusiasm for barrel racing. She
learned to barrel ride with her mother and father beating on 55
gallon drums so she could ride to the sound. Now she wears a radio
earphone and her paernts give her instructions like "left" and
"right" via transmitters to keep her headed in the right
direction. She has been riding since she was 7 and she almost
always places in the top five. She lives in Opelika,Alabama. Her
mother said she was born with eyes that can barely distinguish
between large objects. She uses Braille and a computer to do her
school work. She's an honor roll student and plays drums in the
school band. I thought you might be interested since I know you
love horses yourself. I just thought I'd pass it along.
			     Take Care, Anne
