Index Number: 9885 I am the Chairman of the Board of a local Jaycee chapter, and my chapter has a problem. We would like to make our facility accessible to handicapped members of our community. Unfortunately, the facilities we would need to do so are well beyond our means. I am looking for an organization or individual(s) who might be willing to donate the facilities we need. Anyone who is familiar with the Jaycees knows how involved we are in community fundraising for various charities serving the handicapped. I feel that we need to go one step further in that process; to provide access to our facilities for handicapped members of our local community. After all, the best way for our membership to learn about the special needs of the handicapped is to have handicapped members active in our club. If we can't provide access to our meeting facilities, though, there is no way we can provide that contact. If anyone has information on who I might contact regarding facilites donations, please send it to me. Here is a description of our facility right now: It is an office area on the second floor of a rather old (circa 1900-1910) commercial building. The only access is via a fairly narrow (4 ft wide?) stairway, which has 8" risers (each step is 8", rather than the more modern standard of 7"). At the bottom of the stairs there is a short vestibule (about 4 ft. between the bottom step and the door) and heavy glass double doors. There is also a step up from the sidewalk to the vestibule floor. At the top of the stairs there is a 8-10 ft deep floor area the same width as the stairs, and the entrance to our facilities is a door off the side of this area, right at the top of the stairs. Any suggestions as to the facilities I need, or direction to a source of handicap access planning would be helpful as a first step, since we can't really accept donations until we know what we need. Again, any help you might have to offer is absolutely welcomed and encouraged. Help us serve the Rolla handicapped community. Index Number: 9996 I hate to say this, but looks impossible! I know they make escalator chairs that go up and down stairs, but how do you get the chair up? I guess you could have several chairs at the top to transfer into, but how many? And maybe you could modify the escalator to carry a chair, but is the stairway wide enough? ------------ Militant Handicapped Survivor! Cliff Stevens MT1E228 att!cbnewsj!ncas (908)671-7292
