Here's how a loop (either the little one on an ALD or the big one on a PA
system) works: The loop is a coil of wire which carries an
audio-frequency signal. The signal produces a varying magnetic field,
which gets picked up by the (smaller) coil in a hearing aid. It's almost
like radio transmission, except that the signal can only be picked up by
coils located inside of the loop (I think this is because the coil
produces a magnetic field but not an electric field, but I could be
wrong).
