Minimum Qualifications:  Possess bachelor's degree, and applicable 
NM State Department of Education teaching or vocational 
rehabilitation teaching certificate or ability to obtain same.  
Proficient in techniques used by blind persons and able to teach 
same.  Knowledge of subject area of specialization, of methods, 
techniques, equipment and materials used in the area of 
specialization; of preparation and planning of curse work, of 
sources of information and instructional materials; of teaching 
problems and their solutions.  Ability to motivate and instruct 
students of widely varying levels of interest and achievement; to 
demonstrate friendly and helpful attitude toward students; to earn 
the respect and confidence of students; to maintain order and 
discipline necessary in a learning situation; to express ideas 
clearly and concisely; to enforce agency regulations fairly and 
impartially; to write and maintain curricula, lessons plans, and 
reports.  Incumbents work on an itinerant basis with blind clients 
in their home communities and in institutional settings, providing 
individualized instruction.  Extensive travel, with overnight stays 
in motels, and some evening or off-hours work is required.  
Position involves teaching of specific alternative techniques used 
by blind people.  This includes Braille, cane travel, typing, 
cooking, home and personal management and industrial arts and home 
repairs.  Teacher must be able to coordinate teaching efforts with 
community volunteers and staff of institutions.  Position will 
involve the use of persuasive skills in public speaking, and 
community contacts to promote public acceptance of the notion that 
blind people are competent members of the community.  Counseling 
of blind persons on acceptance of blindness is also required.  
Position will require the capacity to work independently, with 
minimal supervision, and the ability to learn of, and use, 
community resources effectively.
