Willie,
Iam logging on here to upload a file named TRAN.ZIP. This is
a software-only system for converting an ASCII file into speech
and saying it through the computer's internal speaker. The ZIP
file contains a full manual, but for a simple test run with an
ASCII file named, say, MARY.ASC, just type TRAN MARY.ASC from
the DOS prompt. Don't use a real long ASCII file, because there
doesn't seem to be any way to stop it once it starts.
This isn't going to replace any synthizer that I've ever
heard, but it is interesting as an example of progress. About
two years ago, there was another free software-only program
around to do the same job. It sounded like a metal bucket being
cut with a circular saw. This one produces some intelligible
words, and occasionally phrases.
