The Muscular Dystrophy Association in France started the first
telethon in that country about two years ago. In the first year
about $50,000,000 was raised, with actual contributions being 120%
of pledges! A colleague of mine in France with their national
research institute on disability (CTNERHI) has the task of
evaluating the impact of telethons on French society, on the level
of contributions to other associations, on the images and attitudes
concerning disabled people, etc. She is looking at this topic
critically, trying to document the positive and negative aspects of
telethons for disabled people.

I know that telethons is a topic of considerable controversy in
North America. In order to help Catherine with her study, would
you send any of the following to her directly by mail (or to me via
e-mail or post, whichever is easier):

Stories, anecdotes, cartoons, editorials, etc. about telethons
(if possible please note the source)

Personal experiences or opinions about telethons. (please identify if
you are disabled or non-disabled, and whether you benefit
directly from telethon money or not).

References (or actual material if possible) to articles and books
             about telethons.

Telethon guides, manuals, publicity material, budgets, etc. if you
belong to an organization that uses a telethon

For those whose send e-mail directly to me (unless it is marked
confidential), I will summarize the responses and send them back to
Handicap Digest. For those who prefer to respond to this topic
publicly via the net, I will download your remarks over the next
month or so.

Send material to me (e-mail or to address below), or directly to:
