[misc.handicap] Laptop speech synthesizer

Does anyone know of a speech synthesizer that can be used with a laptop
computer? I expect that it would fit where a modem might normally
be installed?

Hi there; There are several but they don;t just fit any laptop on the market
since there doesn't seem to be any statdardization for the slot design.
there is the Artic speech synthesizer from Artic Technologies in Michigan.
there is the Accent Speech synthesizer from the Aicom corp. in Calif, and the
Sounding Board LT from GW Micro in indiana.
All of these synthesizers fit the Toshiba line of laptops
there is also the ASP board from Automated functions in Arlington VA, I forgot
about that one.
All of these synthesizers need speech software to make them useable and any of
these vendors can supply that or direct you.
Hope this helps.

hi jim. it all depends on what type of laptop your using. different
synthesizers will work with different models of laptops. if you have a toshiba
aicom makes an accent synthesizer for most of their models. i personally
believe that the accent is about the best synthesizer available for its price.
i also highly reccomend jaws for a screen reading package. flipper is also
quit good. if you have more questions please let me know. you can contact me
here, by voice at 512 451-1717 or call my bbs at 512 451-4349. i have demos of
most of the screen reader programs available for download.

Hi there and welcome to the echo.
I bought about a month ago the toshiba 1200hb lap top and put the
sounding board lt in it I have flipper and vocal eyes speech
software on the hard drive. If you want to have a lap top without
having to carry other stuff along that limmits your choices to the
sounding board or the accent for lap tops. I am not crazy about
either board but for the portability I will put up with the poorer
quality speech rendered by the s s i 263 chip.

Hi Jim,

Yes, there are laptops already designed with speech synthesizers in them. The
Tosheba is one, sold by Vtek/Telesensory Systems Inc. They insist on putting
Artic Software in it but..... As for adapting another kind yes, this is
possible too, but I am not quite sure how. I think you are right when you say
that a card would work. I know someone who has one and uses an external speech
synthesizer. Ask Prof. Norm Coombs. You can contact him at the same address on
the bottom of this missive. He's also on bitnet but his address escapes me at
the moment.

I like your signature line. Care to join the Good Ship Agape? We're a group of
folks on here who watch out for each other and others as well. We use the
image of a ship because it seems to work well. For example, I was "on watch"
while Betty was away. She's got the tiller now, so to speak. We could use an
Old Salt. Prayers are much appreciated. Check with Betty Draughon for further
details. I think she has the roster. <grin> Our Captain is Christ. Come
aboard?

See you on-line.

there are two that are widely used for the toshiba series of
machines one is called the accent board and the other is the
sounding board l.t. both have marginal speech quality that is a
vary subjective analysis from me because I don't like the ssi 263
chip used but anyway in the toshiba there is a slot called "the user
expansion slot" on the rear pannel and these boards slide in there.
that does not deprive you the use of an internal modem which goes in
 another place on the 1200hb
 hope this helps
