I have been constantly searching for challenges as a programmer,
and have been looking for new ideas for software for the
disabled/handicapped/whatever (I still haven't figured out the
proper label, and that is probably good). After a nasty car
accident in '84 I lost the company I had built up (started a photo
studio in '76) because I couldn't lug the equipment around. Since
then I have gone from cane, to crutches, a back brace, knee braces,
surgery on both legs, and now I have a wheelchair. I also spent a
couple YEARS feeling srry for myself because the pain that I am in
limits the amount, and type of work I can do. I finally decided to
re-train myself as a computer programmer, and since getting
involved with others who are "physically challenged" as I am have
found a definite lack of computer software available. Right now I
am writing software as a hobby and releasing it as shareware over
my bbs (even started a tech support echo for it), and IF anyone has
any type of software that they would like to have written I would
like them to contact me.

I would enjoy the challenge....Anyhow for the rest about me I will
graduate from a local 2 year business school in november with an
associates degree in computer programming & business administration
, and then I hope (!) to be able to finish my B.A. & go on to a
Masters in computer science...my ultimate goal is flexible...I
would like to either go into secondary education (teaching computer
related courses) or start my own software development
company....right now I am kicking around the designs for a weird
shaped keyboard to help eliminate or at least minimalize carpal
tunnel syndrome...

let me know If there is anything I can be of assistance on...

later

I was developing a little carpal tunnel syndrome. Luckily, my doctor is
one of those conservative types. Instead of just killing the pain or
recommending surgery, he pulled out some data on an even simpler
possibility: take some B-6 supplementation. I did a 50 mg. balanced B
tablet four times a day for a month, then three times a day. I've
included it in my normal supplementation for a couple of years now and
it worked just great. Whenever I get into HEAVY keyboarding, I take an
extra 50 mg. a day.

Somewhere I read that someone had designed a keyboard that was split into two
horizontal halves; you could adjust the angle of each piece so you could keep
your hands in a more natural position.

I have just loaded a file called AUD.ZIP which contains a demo program for the
blind non vocal that enables them to communicate via an IBM compatible.

I will be loading more programs for other disabled as time goes by.

The programs are available for distribution as a public service to the
disabled of Australia.

I have Motor Neurone Disease and would be happy to communicate with anyone
with the same or similar - MS for example.

I also feel that "There is no such thing as a disabled person, only people
with disabilities" - trite but true!

Nice to meet you all - even remotely!

Gene,
Thanks for your welcome. I will try and send the software to that BBS as soon
as I find out how to do it, but anyone wanting MARVELOUS IBM software for the
disabled in the US should contact

                        WORDS+, Inc
                        PO Box 1229
                        LANCASTER CA 93584
                        (800) 869 8521 toll free from USA or Canada

Speech software for the disabled, blind, intellectually handicapped etc etc at
reasonable prices. I visited them last year and liked it so much I became
their Oz agent (where have I heard that before?)

Australia is great, I'm biased of course, and I live in Western Australia, the
California of Australia. Services here for the disabled are pretty good, but
archaic insofar as hi-tech aids - reason why I'm trying to make peoAnyway,
that's all for now - hands getting tired - nice talking to you
