DT> Doug, I keep forgetting to call you about this, but I am
DT> so sick of using one particular speech software on the
DT> Toshiba 1000 that I am now using at work that I just must beg
DT> you to come up with a driver that will allow Vocal-eyes to
DT> work with the Automated Functions Board.

David,
I don't know if you missed my earlier message on this, or that it
didn't get to you yet, but you're in luck!
Honestly, I use the Vocal-Eyes generic driver, and created a
generic.dat file out of the codes given as an example in the Vocal-Eyes
docs (One of the appendixes, or appendixi, or whatever the hell the
plural of appendix is!) and the ASP board in my LapTalker seems to do
everything it does with either Softvert or Flipper.
I'd send you the generic.dat file I wrote, but honestly, all you
gotta do is cut the examples out of the doc and it'll work fine.
        Good luck...
                                                        Willie

speaking of synthesizer drivers, doug. do you know of any speech programs
that will work with artic, other than the one that the artic board is packaged
with? I like the artic package very much, but, it would sure be nice to be
able to run some other speech programs with it. Besides, I'm always in the
mood to learn new things, and I would like to become familiar with other
programs, just to see if there might not be some that are better than artic.

Dave,
Right after reading your message I called Ron Morford and then Willie.
Ron said the ASP board uses the same commands as the Sounding Board.
Just to make sure I called Willie and he said he setup the generic driver
with the Sounding Board commands and it works great. Therefore, if you
want to get started right away, you can setup the generic driver the
same as Willie. However, I am going to create a specific ASP driver.
I hope to get the driver created by tomorrow (Friday). I then will zip
a copy to Willie and let him give it a try over the weekend. If he says
all is ok than I will place it into production with all the other drivers
Monday (24th).

I am sure one way or the other Dave, you will be able to use Vocal-Eyes
with the ASP board.

Regards,
  Doug

Dave,
Well, I happen to know of a program called 'Vocal-Eyes'. I don't know
much about it but I believe it will work with your artic board. (grin)

All kidding aside Dave -- Vocal-Eyes will work very well with the Artic
board. Actually, many screen readers will work with it. If you would
like a demonstration copy of Vocal-Eyes to try, just leave me a message
with the disk size and address. I would be glad to send you one. The
entire manual will be included on disk.

I forgot to mention you will need the SONIX and TTS moduals from Artic.
Some of the older boards came with these programs but you have to purchase
them from Artic for the newer boards. I believe the cost is around $50.00.

Regards,
  Doug

Well, I saw an answer to your artic question from Doug. The
SynPhonix is the name of the synthesizer card. For awhile, you
couldn't run anything on that except artic vision and business
vision. They are now making a nodel of the synphonix that will
allow other software to run but I'm not sure if you have to request
that specially when you buy the system. If, when it boots up and
you run artic, it says "Visions enhanced speech translator" followed
by the version number, you probably will need to buy the sonix
program, which you can order from artic for $50. You might try
calling artic and giving them your serial number. They might be
able to tell from their records which version of the synthesizer you
have. As for your other question about silver express, I don't use
that reader so couldn't tell you where to get it locally. There are
lots of boards that have it. William Wilson, the moderator of this
echo, has it on his bbs, blinklink. The number there is
(412)766-0732. It's on other boards too but that's the only one
whose number I can remember. Maybe you could get your sysop to file
request it but you may have to call and download it yourself. Hope
that helps.

What you need depends on what Artic board you have. If you have a
SynPhonix 200 or 210 board, running sonix and tts or the sonixtts
combination, then a variety of speech programs will work with your
board, including PROVOX, the program I distribute and sell. Most
speech programs have a sonix dirver. If you have a 215 board,
which is locked to Articvis9ion or Businessvision, then you will
need to buy a copy of sonix-2 from Artic. It costs fifty dollars
and provides the standard sonix/tts interface for your board. You
will have to provide them with your board's serial number, as
sonix-2 is locked to your board as AV or BV is. I use sonix-2
every day with provox and have had no problems in a year and a
half. Once you have sonix-2 you can run any screen review program
that works with the standard artic 200 9r 210 board. David Amdrews
