well, I was thinking of something like that. I have heard of a
card that you can get for around $250, or so, that allows you to
digitize voice, and save it to hard disk. Takes a lot of space to
sttore voice, depending upon sampling rate. Since we're dealing
with phone lines, the sampling rate would not have to be more than,
let's say 10 kilohertz, or so. Not sure what those cards sample
at, though. think they might be for music, or something. No
reason yu couldn't digitize voice, then upload it to a board for
future download, or something. Now, wouldn't that be neat!!??
Only problem is that a person would need 100 megs of drive space to
get 15 to 20 minutes of digitized speech on there, I think. Great
idea, though, Dan! Hope to hear from you very soonn Dave Martin

I run a service called NEWSLINE for the Blind. We use volunteers
to read virtually the entire Albuquerque Journal each day. Their
voices are digitized and stored on hard disk. Listeners call in
using a touch tone phone and retrieve the parts of the paper they
want. They can choose what categories they want, skip or skim or
read each story. We use digitizing boards from Dialogic Corp. My
guess is that they are digitizing from Khz 8 to Khz10 of voice. It
is good phone quality. The digitization process consumes 3K of
disk space per second. This works out to ten magabytes an hour.
The boards also automatically compress the data, so without this
compression, the files would be even larger.
