Hi Bill,

Well, it's a good move. Call the local office of Personnel for the feds, in
the phone book under feds. Also, check with your state listings for the same
office. Then, get yourself a reader/amanuensis and go to. It'll take a
looooooooong time to fill out aaaaaaaaalllllllll those forms, but it may pay
off. Take as many of those dingdong tests as you can.

Remember to have lots of coffee and cookies for your reader/amanuensis and
lots of a sense of humor, you'll need it!

See you on-line. Good luck.

Ann P.

Hi Bill,

>"So, Anne, when you call these offices and they give you the
>"runaround, what do you do then?

You find the right office and stop futzing around with ignorant
lackies!!!! What you do is call the local office of personnel for
the feds. It's listed in the phone book. Tell them three things.
One, "I am blind and I want to take the civil service test for
administrative positions. I will need special accomodations:
braille, tape, extra time, special proctor, etc." Two, "I want to
fill out gs171 or its current equivalent. Please send it
to:......" Three, "If you, the person you are talking to, can not
help me, please tell me who can. Can you give me the number,
please."

That, my dear Bill is what you do first.

>" I ask because I thought that I
>"tried that some time ago and they told me that I had to call a
>"certain office that I could never find the number for.

Arrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!!! When you call again, remind them that you are
blind and find it difficult to look up numbers. Ask them for the
number and when they give it to you write it down immediately. If
you don't, like me, you'll forget it.

>"Tell me about the reader. I must provide one, do I understand
>"that correctly?

No, no, no, I didn't mean you had to provide the reader in order to
take the test, I meant that you had to get somebody to read and
write for you if you're going to fill out gs171, the general
application to work for the feds. It's long, very long, and very
complicated, and very frustrating to any reader, no matter how
expert. The whole dingdong thing has little tiny boxes where you
put in a letter or number at a time. That's why I suggested you
have lots and lots of coffee (or whatever your reader/amanuensis
likes to use as a stimulant) and lots of cookies/candy/eats to keep
up the energy level. Otherwise you are likely to be charged for
overworking your reader/amanuensis. <grin>

No, you do not provide the reader for the test. They provide the
proctor who can read for you if you like or will just take down
answers. It depends on how you like to take the test. You can do it
any way you like. They have it in braille, large print, cassette.
You can have any combination of the three. You can also use a vtek
if you want. THE FOLLOWING IS IN CAPS!!!!!!! REMEMBER TO REMIND
THEM THAT BECAUSE OF YOUR DISABILITY YOU GET THE EXTRA TIME, DOUBLE
TIME. I think it's twelve hours now.

>"Also, must you have an exact idea of what you are looking, or can
>"you just take the test anyway?

That is why I said take the test for general administrative
positions. That covers a wide area and would probablly be your best
bet. can somebody tell me why the blue blazes rehab counselors in
Denver aren't doing their job? Are they doing it anywhere else? No,
don't answer that. I couldn't stand the flood of mail. <evil grin>

Good luck, Bill.

Anne, I really had a chuckle at the last coment you wrote in your last
post about the Denver rehab people. I'm afraid it's even worse than
you feared as it took them at least six weeks for them to decide that I
am underemployed. And as it is, the administrative goons there don't
even pay the guy who is working with me. Boy the whole thing makes me
want to cuss. And to top it all, they probably are proud of themselves
because they got themselves a ******* volunteer. The whole thing makes
me want to scream.
Anyway, Your help is most appreciated, and sorry,a but these things
take me a while.
Hey, I don't think I told you this, but my insurance company has given
me the green light to get the new Accent speech card for my swapped
computer.
Also, as a temporary thing, I'm possibly going to change jobs again.
I'll (providing this works out) be working at a hotel. Will tell you
more later.
Bill.

I believe you'll find that the application form is sf171 not
gs171. Just remember that this designation stands for standard
form 171. It is used as the standard job application form for
federal civil service. Relating something hard to remember to
something well known is an old memorization trick.

I'd suggest you search out jobs in your area that are difficult for
the federal government to keep filled. You may already be
qualified to fill them. If not, consider getting the
training/education required to qualify. They will try harder to
fill, and keep filled, these positions.

Ask about excepted (non-competitive) service. This program will
give you the opportunity to get your foot in the door. It may be
extremely difficult to get into the federal civil service system,
but once inside, it is much easier to find that job you're looking
for. Consider anything that you're qualified for to get inside,
then look for better opportunities.

Above all, be persistent. The federal civil service system is
huge, and most of the personnel offices are swamped, especially
now. Be warned, most federal agencies are reducing their
personnel. It is therefore important to find out what will make
you attractive as an employee to your local federal agencies. You
must do this if you expect to be asked to enter the system at the
same time many are being forced to leave. Don't let this
discourage you.

Remember also, it is your responsibility to search out this info.
Don't assume anyone will look out for you.

Happy hunting ....

Curt
