Has anyone bought and used one? I would like to know if you can use it
for other things, such as programmahble CD players, radios, etc. I am
thinking of buying one, but I would like to know more first.

I've got one and use it fairl"y regularly (unless my cable service
is out like it currently is).

When you get the device you've got to program it with your remote
control's IR codes. I assume you could use the codes from any
remote. The device sends an "on" sequence ("tv power, vcr power,
channel, record") and an off sequence ("stop tv power, vcr power").
If that's compatible with your other equipment, or if you can make
it compatible, then you're all set.
