Has anyone bought and used one? I would like to know if you can use it
for other things, such as programmahble CD players, radios, etc. I am
thinking of buying one, but I would like to know more first.

When you get the device you've got to program it with your remote control's IR codes. I assume you could use the codes from any remote. The device sends an "on" sequence ("tv power, vcr power, channel, record") and an off sequence ("stop tv power, vcr power").
