I have a question for anyone who has the answer. I have been using
Soft Vert and feel it is a good program for what it does. However, I feel
now I need to change do to many reasons. Here is what I have and what I am
lloking for in a speech package.

I have a DTK 386-SX 16 Mhz mother board, with AMI bios
solutions graphics monochrome card and monitor (solutions allows you to run
color programs on a non color machine.

3 serial and one parallel plus game port
204 meg Priam with a Western Digital
      WD1006-sr1 harddisk RLL controler
the controler has floppy suport for a 1.2 and 1.44 meg floppies.
Colorado Memory Systems 40 meg tape backup with card
   6 megs of ram.
         Software

Front end mailer is Binkleyterm 2.40
   Bbs package is Searchlight Bbs
   Qemm memory manager

That is all I can think of oh yea I use x00.sys communications driver
version 1.22J.
I am looking for a flexible, memory efficient, fast, package, but not
to expensive.ahah I am looking for a package that doesn't crash at every
little thing and which is small enough to be loaded in to high ram. I have
been looking at the Artic so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

                                   Scot

Scott,
Are you looking to support a particular synthesizer or buying a new
one as well? In any case, you may want to take a look at flipper
available from Omnichron at (415) 540-6455. It takes about 50K, can be
loaded into high memory, and supports a wide variety of synthesizers.
Price is $395 and they will send a free demo copy. My only complaint is
the difficulty of obtaining telephone support (limitted to a few hours
three times a week).

Give Vocal-Eyes a try, It will load in to either extended or expanded
memory, and you will fall in love with it.
I am using Searchlight BBS, and I am having no problems what so ever.
Also Vocal-Eyes will work with several different speech boards both
enternal and external standalone speech systems.
Vocal-Eyes is sold by GW Micro.

Scott,

Vocal Eyse should work fine on your laptalker. Willie has a
laptalker. If I am not mistaken, that laptop uses an asp card for
speech, doesn't it? You know, the one from Automated Functions
INC? If that is the case, there is a driver just for that speech
card. Vocal eyes comes with a bunch of drivers, so you shouldn't
have a problem getting it to work with just abouat any speech
device. As for a speech card for your 386, I would reccomend the
sounding board. In my opinion, it is the best and most responsive
card available in its price range. You will probably get many
other opinions on this because everybody has different tastes on
what they want their speech device to sound like, but the real key
here I think is responsiveness. The external type speech units all
lag behind any of the internal cards in that department.

Glad to see that my messages are reaching you. Good luck finding
the equipment you want. The sounding board and Vocal eyes are
available from GW Micro. Doug Geoffray, the author of Vocal Eyes,
has already left you mesage herre with his address and phone
number. They have a package deal on the sounding board/vocal eyes
combination where you can save a few bucks if you buy them
together. Take care, and talk soon.... j

Best regards, Rick
