DM> A new screen reader will soon appear from Computersmith in
 DM> Louisville.
DM> It's called ASAP, Automatic Speech Access Program. It's
 DM> said
DM> to be completely automatic, and almost as easy to use as
DM> Apple programs that were written specifically for the
DM> blind. It's been in the making for some two years, and the
DM> guy who runs the company claims it will work for pretty
 DM> much any application.
DM> It's designed to worked with the newly-available
DM> Doubletalk PC synthesizer, which has unbelievable speech for
DM> $279! The Apple Doubletalk has been around for at least
DM> a year now. Well, the screen reader competion is really
DM> heating up, eh? Call Roger for more
DM> info, at (502) 893-7310. He hopes to have the
DM> ASAP program available either by year's end, or at the
DM> first of the year. I certainly wish him luck. He claims no
DM> configuring is necessary for his program: Just plug in the
 DM> speech card,
DM> boot up speech, and start playing!
DM> Can it really be that easy?

Well, Daveed, I wonder? I sure would like to see such a speech program. It is hard to understand that any speech program could work that well. If that is the case, it will certainly modify all speech programs, or they will put the others out of business.

               Walter
 DM> Stay tuned!

Susan: Re the speech synthesizer, I don't
know about other ones, but I gather it will work with
others. You'll have to call to check for sure. R
Robert Smith: Computersmith Enterprises:

He's also publishing the magazine BAUD, but is
changing the meaning of the title to include all
computers and adaptive technologies.
A free year's subscription on disk or cassette will
come with the purchase of the ASAP screen reader package.

Daveed,
I certainly wish such a product could be possible but I seriously
don't believe it could be that simple. If every program had a consistant
interface then I would not be as negative but in todays computer software,
everybody does there own thing.

Even still, you can bet I will be keeping a watchfull eye on this.

Regards,
  Doug

My feelings exactly. However, I understand
the man behind ASAP is your old competitor, Larry Skutchan.
Now forgive me for saying this, Doug, but his programs
for the Apple were very nifty -- which doesn't mean that
yours aren't just as great
!
Seriously, I don't think Larry approaches programming
lightly, and I'm looking forward to hearing more
about ASAP. Please do check it out.
We need quality competition in this market
to weed out the ones that just don't cut it!
I wish all of you all the luck in the world!
Coonsumers have become much more discriminating
than they were a decade ago!
By the way, please check out the Doubletalk
synthesizer for the PC.
I'm sure Randy Carlstrom would be happy
to work with you.

I think Randy is one of the most accommodating,
and conscientious developers around. His stuff is not just
for the blind, but he's really hustled to try
to please blind folks. It's the people like
you, Dan, Randy, and Larry that
really make me proud of much that is fine
in the sensory devices biz!
