Index Number: 6097 I have sceen some talk about handicap parking. i don't think i need to have parking any closer then anyone else. i would like a space a little bigger just for the wheel chair ramp. i don't need to be right at the door. i think there should be a differents between wheel chair parking and other handicap parking. because i being in a chair should not take a space next to the door which should be for someone who has a hard time walking or a bad hart or something. i just need a little bigger place for the ramp. i don't care if it isn't right up front. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!343!5!Greg.Wick Internet: Greg.Wick@f5.n343.z1.fidonet.org

Greg, But what about those not using an electric wheelchair and aren't strong enough to wheel themselves over long distances, especially in foul weather. I use an electric wheelchair and would not be inconvenienced by not parking next to the door, except in bad weather. But, I couldn't assume that others in wheelchairs don't need to be close to the door. I think that the solution would be to make sure that there are a sufficient number of "generic" handicap parking spaces based on the maximum occupancy of the facilities served by those spaces. I have made it a policy to not park in the handicapped slots because some jerk normally pulls in too close and blocks me outta of my car. I park out near the edge of the lot where I'm sure no one will block me out. On rainy days I park in close but protect myself by leaving lots of space, like between the drivers door and the wall or a light poll. -=joe=- -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!302!Joe.Chamberlain Internet: Joe.Chamberlain@f302.n141.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 6180 The American National Standards Institute do not mandate a larger parking place, only the Federal Standards Guide does. Here in Howard County Maryland, I am a member of the disabled commission of the county which has the authority to pass county ordinances and one that we have passed here is mandating that at least one of the handicapped parking places be large enough to accomodate a lift van. e.g. I have a 1989 Dodge Ram Van with a Ricon lift installed and I require 8' from the side of my van or a total of 10' altogether width in space to use my lift. The County council backed the legislation that we wrote and the county is in the process of making at least one of the handicapped parking spaces (usually there are three together) large enough for a lift van to conveniently fit and use the lift. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!261!1045!Tim.Watts Internet: Tim.Watts@f1045.n261.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 6204 GW> thats the main reson i don't park in those spots. they forget that a GW> wheel chair van needs a few feet extra for the ramp the more room for the GW> chair to get off the ramp. so it takes almost two spaces. i would rather GW> park closer to the back and get more room. One of the methods I use when parking close in is to park in a area where they cannot block my access. Next to a wall or pole works great. -=joe=- -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!302!Joe.Chamberlain Internet: Joe.Chamberlain@f302.n141.z1.fidonet.org
