Shel,
Of course during my writing Vocal-Eyes I also ran across the problem
of the DECtalk. It is one of the slowest responding synthesizers on the
market. I have just recently rewrote my driver for the DECtalk in order
to speed it up even more. It is now as fast as it can possible be. You
say you may wait more then 2 seconds to start reading a line. This sounds
extreemly longer than it should take. It would make a difference on what
BAUD rate your DEC is running. Most come at 9600 BAUD however, there are
a few that run at 1200 BAUD. If yours is 1200 BAUD, you might think of
getting it changed to 9600 BAUD. I am sure this would speed things up
for you. Best of luck!
  Regards,
    Doug

I'm interested in possibly perchasing a Dectalk. Do you
get those from DEC directly?

I understand that blinks can get a special reduced price for them.
Did you get this deal, and if so how?

thanks

Jim,

If you'd like, you can get a DECtalk directly from Digital (DEC).
I believe the phone number 1-800-digital will put you in contact
with people who can eventually get you in touch with the people
you'd need to talk with. It might be easier to go through your
local sales office and let them do all the foot work.

As for the discount, well, yes and no. It is true that DEC offers
a discount on DECtalks. Exactly how much of a discount, I'm not
sure. I've heard everything from 16% to 60%. Unfortunately, this
discount is not offered to individuals but to organizations. I'm
not sure what further restrictions apply. It may be that the
organization needs to be non-proffit, I simply don't know.

While I do work for DEC, I am a software engineer in the terminal
server group. I don't work with the DECtalk people and use DECtalk
very rarely myself. In case anyone cares, the reason I don't use
DECtalk much is because I use braille very heavily. Whenever I do
use speech I use DECtalk.
