Index Number: 9732 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] BK> Gary, speaking of word processors, I've recently heard good BK> reports about a word processor called Mind Reader. Bill, Although I havn't looked at it for a while, I doubt seriously that MindReader has changed much in ways that would make it more speech friendly than it was when it was first released and I looked at it, and that wasn't friendly at all! MindReader is one of those artificial intelligence word processors that tries to help the poor typist by guessing words before you are finished typing them. That is, it has a dictionary of entries that it looks into as you type letters and after you have entered so many a window will pop up with likely guesses as to the word you are typing, and to save the time of typing in the remainder, you can select from these and have the program finish your typing it for you! I never considered myself a good typist, but boy, I sure am better than needing this sort of thing! I can see how it would be great for someone who has limited use of their hands, or even for someone who is an extremely slow typist, but for most of us I think it would be more of a hindrance than a benefit. So far as its compatibility with speech goes, I didn't really try that hard to set up for it because of the reasons above, but so far as I could tell it would be very difficult to come up with a usable configuration. Maybe, just maybe, MindReader could be a worthwhile word processor for someone not too good with a keyboard but who has fully functioning peepers, but I don't think it is worth a darn for the rest of us! hmmm...that doesn't sound good. i am keying one-handed most of the time. but
i find that moving my one good hand back and forth over the entire keyboard is
tiring and kind of slow. are mindreader's guesses any good? i think i read
or heard somewhere that you can add words to its vocabulary. does it get
slower as its vocabulary gets larger?
thanks for any info you can provide.

I've read of a one handed keyboard, which is shaped like this: O O For the fingers O O O Two buttons for the thumb O It is apparently possible to type uppercase, lowercase, and punctuation symbols. It would require good co-ordination on one hand at least, as the buttons are pressed down in combinations to generate a character. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!3!681!853.1!Stephen.White Internet: Stephen.White@p1.f853.n681.z3.fidonet.org

thanks. that is good to know about if it ever becomes necessary. for now, with
keyboard macros and some patience i am okay on a standard key board. i have
good enough reach that i can do just about any 2 key combinaton using alt,
ctrl, or shift one handed. i can park my left hand over the shift key if
capitalization seem necessary. i just got mind reader and it has
possibilities.

Actually, it's possible to type faster on that one handed keyboard than is possible on a two handed keyboard. I would get one for myself if I could be bothered. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!3!681!853.1!Stephen.White Internet: Stephen.White@p1.f853.n681.z3.fidonet.org
