Index Number: 11682 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] You asked that if we used Newsline that we pass along our thoughts to you. I checked it out on Saturday, November 3, 1990 and was quite impressed. T.V. listings are of interest to me and I found that they were arranged quite nicely. As there is so much information for T.V. listings it would not be good to have to wead through the entire list. Why not use a similar approach in the columnists rather than putting them in one block. If I wanted to see what Ann Landers had to say for example it would be nice to be able to access that column directly. The readers were quite good I particularly liked the one who did the weather for Saturday, November 3, 1990. In a volunteer situation one can't expect all readers to be that good. Your menus were quite helpful but brief. I was also impressed with the audio clarity. If I lived in the Albuquerque area I would definitely subscribe. This beats a Radio Reading Service all to heck and back. David, this system is much better than the one in Michigan. You've got a good thing going. Keep up the good work. Index Number: 12108 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] Grant, Thanks for the kind words about NEWSLINE. We had a pot luck dinner for our volunteers and listeners this past week end. It was a success I think. Ten percent of our listeners came, and that was without good public transportation. I have never seen that kind of listener turn-out for a regular Reading Service event. You asked about arranging columnists like we have the TV Guide, with each numbered. The problem is that there is no intuitive way to choose a given columnist, like a time. Any assignment we make is initially going to be artitrary. However, with TV listings, you press the hour, then one for am two for pm. The Minnesota system originally set up columnists, ads etc., with numbers. Their listeners eventually requested that they be eliminated, and they now do as we do. We usually have from five to seven columnists, so it is pretty quick to run through them. David Andrews ...
