Hi Linda,

The braille over lay that I told you about will work on any micro
wave that has touch pads. You can also use dymo tap braille
labels. If you want to broil something in the micro wave you can
use a browning dish. You can get browning dishes at most micro
wave stores. Jimmy Gatteys is now living in Lubock. I am not sure
what he is doing. I think he is going to Texas Tech. Ronie
Stricland is working in Dallas as a x ray film developer. I Guess
you know that Bill McKinnis was killed in a car reck several years
ago. At the present time, I am maried and have three children. I
have bben living in California for three years. What do you do and
have you heard from anyone for Dalas Services?

Greg, those overlays, or dymo tape might not work on all touch
pads. The oven I had before had a touch pad that was heat
sensative, and not pressure sensative. If you cover up the heat
sensative touch pad, the heat from your finger will not get to the
pad. Today most of them may be pressure sensative, I don't know.
The way you can tell, is to touch it withoug any pressure, and if
it works, then it is heat sensative. If you have to put pressure
to the pad, then the overlay, or dymo tape will work. In my old
one, I had to put dymo tape next to the number in stead on top.

               Walter

We have a pressure sensitive touch pad on our microwave oven, and
we still put the brailled dymo labels next to the buttons instead
of on top of the buttons. That way, the tape doesn't obscure the
buttons for sighted folks (like me), and we don't have to worry
about the labels falling off (the labels would flex every time
someone pushed the button if they were on top of the buttons).

We got an official braille overlay and braille instruction manual
from the manufacturer, but they weren't terribly useful because
the just used single letters (A, B, C, ...) to label everything
instead of using a mnemonic label. Rather than try to remember
that "F" is Low, "G" is Medium Low, "H" is Medium, etc., my wife
very reasonably decided to label the buttons "LOW", "ML", "MED",
etc. The problem then was that the instruction manual described
everything in terms of the original non-mnemonic, single letter
labels used by the overlay. Sigh. It's a good thing that
microwave ovens are easy to use without re-reading the manual
every time.

Hi Walter,

You haved a good point. I think it is best to have the touch
sensitive pads. You are corect labels do not work to well withheat
sensitive pads. We have a general Electric and are having good
results. Thanks for the advice.

I am using a Panasonic micro convection oven, and I love it.
It uses a touch pad also.
I am using clear dimotape.
I just punch out little round circles from the strip of tape and place
each circle in the center of each button.
This way, sighted people can use the oven as well as a blind person.
From time to time, we remove the circles, clean the pad, and put new
ones back on the pad.
The other thing you might want to remember is that a lot of ovens have
charts written near the buttons, so if you use non clear tape, you will
probably be covering up the charts as well as other short instructions
whitch have been printed on the face of the touchpads.
Yes, it is good that microwaves are easy to use.
