AH> Anybody have a number for RC systems, I am interested in
AH> the DoubleTalk, but haven't gotten any info yet.

Al,
I am at the NFB convention in Pennsylvania so I don't have access
to RC Systems phone number. However, I see that Daveed has already given
you the number anyway.

About one month ago I talked with Randy to find out what it would take
to get Vocal-Eyes to work with the DoubleTalk. Randy was more than willing
to work with me. In fact he sent me a DoubleTalk for the PC. I am told
there are only about 10 in the field. He has not actualy released the
product yet. I received the DoubleTalk and started working with it.
Actually, Vocal-Eyes is already compatible with it if you use the generic
driver and setup the commands as per his documentation. However, I would
like to support the board even farther. I will be creating a device
driver specifically for it. I have given Randy a few ideas of what would
make the DoubleTalk better for the blind community. He sounded like
he would be willing to work with me on this.

Regards,
  Doug

Al: The DoubleTalk's speech is an algorithm
from First Bytes Sgoftware in Santa Anna,
California. It is a software-based algorithm
that RC System is burning into a chip.
The algorithm is being revamped, and
should be available early next
year. I'd like to see some of the
smaller adaptive tech companies get together to
explore possibilities for putting the revised
algorithm on a chip.
The speech is much better than the SSI-263 chip!

DM> Watch out, Doug! Randy might just take you seriously, and you
DM> could find yourselves with a DoubleTalk that rivals or even
 DM> outdoes the Sounding Board!
DM> Both you and Randy are great guys! Pity you are competitors!

Daveed,
The DoubleTalk is a nice synthesizers but it was not designed for the
blind user in mind. Randy is making some changes for that but still
has a ways to go. For example, it is not nearly as responsive as the
Sounding Board. It does not offer fastforward or rewind. It does have
a farly good speech quality though.

By the way, I really don't consider Randy a competitor. I consider him
a friend.

Regards,
  Doug
