Index Number: 12124 Request for Information: Access to Phones Hello all, I'm looking for information on systems that assist speech understanding over telephones. In particular, the son of a friend is profoundly hard of hearing and is looking for assistance with voice communication over phone lines. I believe the current state of the art for computer based speaker independent voice recognition over phone lines is limited to quite small vocabularies on the order of the ten digits, yes, no. There are probably systems which can manage slightly larger vocabularies for specific applications such as airline reservations. We were also wondering about systems that might provide a variety of cues for understanding without actually going as far as text output.
