been working with the state library here in california on this
patron access question to the talking book database. we're now
exploring r & d grants to investigate options of access. any ideas
on grant/funding sources from anyone on here would be greatly
appreciated. dan...

Hi Dan: I haven't been following the library access thread, but it sounds
like a good idea. Couple of thoughts about grant money. Check with the
National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research, U.S.
Department of Education, William
Graves, Director, 330 C Street, S.W. Washington, DC 20202. Ask them for
their current catalog of grants, and the dealines and application forms for
future competitions. They have a pretty broad authorization to fund things,
and Bill Graves use to run the Rehab and Training center for the Blind
(research stuff) down in Mississippi. At least he knows about blind stuff
which is a refreshing change from prior administrations. NIDRR has funded
things like the SERIES computer network in Oregon, project Enable in West
Virginia, etc. Also, I think Kurt Cylke at NLS is doing comething with a
database, and there is a coalition called CIPHr or something like that
trying to get everything cataloged. Call me if you want to talk further.
Work 202-457-1498 or home 202-364-0781.
Take care, Scott
PS. Are you from San Francisco? If so, do you know a friend of mine by the
name of Jerry Fields who use to be from San Raphael.

I don't have any specific ideas on grant funding sources, although I will think
about it. There are a few foundations that support blind projects, such as the
ReaersDigest Fund for the Blind, etc. There are also a number of computer
systems around the country that have NLS holdings in them. NLS itself has
developed a PC version, most libraries use an automation system by a company
called DRA, the Libraries in New Jersey-Philadelphia-and-Pittsburgh have
developed their own system, and the Suburban Audio-Visual System in Chicago also
maintains its own system. Whether any of these systems could offer Modem
access, I don't know...
