Index Number: 12115 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] Thanks Ann. You're right of course, although I was hoping folks interested would pick up the phone number, but I can see where someone coming in in the middle wouldn't have caught it. Anyway, to find out all about the Reader Project, call (800)321-8398, or (800)321-TEXT. They are offering beta test versions now. The last price I heard was $100. It is basically a book reader and catalog manager. The reader is used to read books, and the catalog is their catalog of books to order. The fancy communications options referred to their intention to have you be able to download books you wanted and also catalog updates. This is not available. You order your books from them by phone or mail and get them on diskette through the mail. I hope that helps. Hopefully, the recording has the latest, up-to-date information on it. thanks again, Jim Shaffer -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!382!60!Jim.Shaffer Internet: Jim.Shaffer@f60.n382.z1.fidonet.org

There's another company producing digital books called SoftServ. They've been advertising pretty heavily on Genie. I got one of their books. It's a totally different system than the Reader Project. You download your book in a .ZIP file, then use a program called "lockit" to unlock the book. You get the password from SoftServ. Anyway, you can then read the book after you unzip it. It's in flat ASCII files so you can use just whatever to read it. No nice bookmarking software, etc, though. I'm in the process of writing some myself. Hope to see you on Genie maybe sometime Ann. The way I mark docs of text files that I am reading in a word processor, when I have to stop, is to block from where I stop, to the top of the file, and save it under another name so as not to destroy the original file. When I am ready to continue reading, I just import the piece of a file, and I am ready to start where I left off.
