SPINAL CORD INJURY
a Team Approach to Comprehensive Management and
Integrated Research Continuing Education
This course is taking place January 23-27, 1991 at the Sheraton Bal
Harbor in Bal Harbor, Florida. The course is designed for
physicians, scientists, nurses, and allied health professionals
involved in the care of and/or research of spinal cord injuries. The
latest in diagnostic and management protocols and technology
(including contemporary research) will be presented from both the
laboratory and clinical perspective. Faculty include the multi-
diciplinary team of one of the largest clinical care and research
spinal cord injury centers in the world complemented by distinguished
guest faculty.
Major topic areas include: 1) Clinical Laboratory Interface (two
sessions); 2)Diagnosis and Early Management of SCI (two sessions); 3)
Treatment of Spinal and Systemic Sequelae; 4) Rehabilitation Issues;
and 5) New Possibilities for Spinal Man. Following the didactic
presentations, a daily panel discussion/luncheon with the faculty
will provide the opportunity for audience / faculty interaction.
The progam also includes: 1) a tour of the research facilities of
the Miami Project at UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center; 2) poolside
demonstration and accident sceen techniquesfor extrication and spinal
immobilization; and 3) hydrotherapy demonstration.
Upon completion of these sessions participants should be able to;
1) discuss curent research approaches and statigies to spinal cord
injury; 2) understand the epidemiologic nature and the
pothologic/physiologic changes patients; 3)be able to identify and
discuss appropriate triage and trauma systems approach approaches to
the initial management of SCI; 4) appropriately treat systemic and
associated complications in the acute or cronic SCI patients; 5)
appriciate and recognize the psycho social, sexuality, and
reproductive issues confronting patients with spinal cord injury; 6)
employ appropriate SCI immobilization techniques for water rescue and
accident extrication of victims; and 7) discuss the future potential
for "spinal man".
Tuition (prior to December 15th) is $450 for physicians in
practice, $250 for physicians in training, US military/government,
research scientists, nurses and allied health professionals. Room
rates run between $125 and $185 per night. For registration form
