Index Number: 11271 Gosh, let me remind some of those who mentioned replacing the still quite inadequate real time captioning with an ASL interpreter, that a LOT of us, who can't hear well, also don't know ASL. That means roughly 80% of the hearing impaired, who, in turn, are about 2+% of the population. Do I have the figures right? In any event, there are a devil of a lot of hearing impaired people who do not sign, but who find even the crazy captions a big help. In addition, there are many illiterates or poor readers, immigrants, and just plain kids who find captioning a way to deal with reading and/or English. The bottom line is, let's improve the technology of real time captioning so it can deal with real time language better!
