[This is from the Blink Talk Conference]
Dan, yesterday I talked to a CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the
Blind) area manager for Ontario. Contrary to popular there is no
socialized medicine for dog guides. She did tell me that each Province
had a CNIB dog guide coordinator. This coordinator has access to a
"general dog guide fund". These funds (if available, sometimes the
funds are low or have been used) CAN, be used to assist a handler with
a catastrophy. The CNIB feels the handler should be responsible for
routine vet care and food. I one example I was told of an elderly
woman on fixed income being helped after accumulating fiftheen-hundered
dollars in vet bills. I have asked the Ontario coordinator to send me
a list of dog guide coordinators throughout Canada.
