Ugh, I just spoke with a member of the Greater Metroplex A.K.C.
They are drafting a letter asking area Veterinarians to provide
free or low cost service to people with disabilities who have
service dogs. They would like my help in composing the letter. Are
there any other similar programs out there? Do any of you get a
discount or free service because your dog is a guide? Let me know
if your Vet gives you a break. I am really not interested in how
the NFB or ACB feels about this, what I want are answers from dog
guide owners who have to face the financial obligation of keeping
their dog healthy. Thanks, Happy Thanksgiving, Henry

Some states provide funds to help maintain a dog guide. Usually under
social service guidelines. They look at the dog as being a necessity
of life. Not sure what states do or don't, but the amount is generally
small. In most cases it would pay for a bag of food a month and two
vet visits a year. Also, Canada has something along those lines,
national health care for dog guides. I can look into it further if you
like.

Hi Henry,

Check with RNIB, I think, though I'm not sure that British dog-guide owners
don't pay.

how about health care insurance? if all the schools got together (guide dog
council) and formed a non-profit major medical health care for guide dogs.
(like vpi- vet pet insurance)
some of the guide dog schools also provide a warenty for the first year... dan
out of sight, out of my mind!

hi dan there many vets and clinics that provide free care for your
guide dog. I know in colorado the colorado center for the blind
provides care free. Vets can get tax write offs for providing free
care for a guide dog.

the december issue of dog fancy has an item about this. ("it's a dog's
world" column, page 13) a grooming salon called Groomingtail's, in the
chelsea district of manhattan (new york city) offeres a special 50%
discount on full-service grooming for guide dogs. additionally they will
pick up and deliver the dog free. groomingtail's is located at 261 w. 21st
st (between 7th and 8th avenues) and the phone number (for an appointment)
is 212-929-5074.
i have no connection with this place and i'm not endorsing it, just
providing the informatiorn (for whatever it's worth) from dog fancy.

btw, please let me know if anyone's reader has a problem with my

The Lion's generosity spreads beyond Leader Dogs. They support
a wide variety of needed services and programs throughout the
world. Some clubs have continued to aid Leader dog graduates
when they encounter a catastrophic situation. As a rule - Lions
Clubs themselves decide where to place their support and
assistance. In one situation a club set up a small trust to
help cover the costs associated with maintaining the health of a
graduate's Leader Dog. I'll certainly mention your concern to
Lions I meet and talk to.

Brad, sure I know the Lions do great stuff, and I also know that they
support other than Leader Dog; the Lions Club in Westchester County is
very active in supporting Guiding Eyes, where I got my guide. I was
just meaning that it could be a great feather in their collective caps,
if they could get discount projects going in metro areas, where most
blind people probably tend to live; then it would not matter where you
got your guide, but the lions would be supporting blind folks in general
yet again.

By the way, do you know how I can contact the Lions in Arlington,
Alexandria or Falls Church, VA? I am both interested in becoming a
member, and also interested in speaking about guide dogs or adaptive
technology. Any help you can be will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, DV.
