A friend of mine is looking for a source to purchase a set of
headphones that can accept audio from two different sources. He needs
to hear sound from the PC synthesizer and a tape machine. I know that
this type of thing is available, but I don't remember from where. Any
ideas?

Probably the cheapest solution is to get two pairs of the "in-the-ear" type
(NOT the molded plastic ones with the cheap transducers; get the cushioned
type which I've seen at department stores for around $9.95 a pair) and put one
of each in the ears.

Steve, I know of two sources you might check for tthe equipment you
mentioned for hearing both a tape recorder playback and a speech
synth at the same time.

PC Partners has a device that sells for $85 that is suppose to
handle that type of situation. Their phone number is (301)
744-3724.

Mr. Greg Mark at St. Louis also sells a device called "The Speech
Enhancer" which does an excellent job of providing just what youare
asking for with a volume control provided also on the unit. The
Cost of this unit is $40. I have used this device a lot in the
past and am buying several for our computer training program. I do
not have the number handy, but I am sure you can get it from
information at St. Louis Missouri area code 314. Ok, here is his
business number (314) 966-6500.

Hi Steve; Well I am sory I don't have contact information, but companies
such as Plantronics in New Jampshire can custom make a headset like
that.
they take a while, but they do it.
Another suggestion is that if the person needs it for his/her job, if
there vendor of tape equipment I am assuming a dictation situation, is
wanting to keep them happy, you can usually take a dictation headset and
disassemble it quite easily and put in it the pieces you want such as
two earphones insetad of one.
Well hope this helps somewhat and is not plain confusing.
Best 73 and have a merry Chriistmas and a happy new year.
Don

Hi steve, i also use headphones to listen to my speech synthesizer and
cassette player at the same time. i didn't have to buy anything
expensive or fancy. i went to radio shack and bought a standard y
connection then i plugged the headphones into the leg of the y and then
ran cables from the speech synthesizer and from the cassette player
to the y connecter. out of the left ear i can hear 1 and out of the
right ear i can hear the other. if i will be listening to only 1 for a
great length of time i can disconnect and make it steereo. good luck,
h.k.

Don, I am running Artic 2.10 at this time. Reflections was a lot of
work and even with eye balls, we had trouble. I used the Printer
Voice in Artic to capture what came to the screen. However, if
anything on the screen changed or updated after the original screen
write, the speech would not work. Now I know Artic will indeed
notifyyou of a status line that changes, however, in this case, the
data on the screen that changes is not always in the same place.

The people at SmartTerm assured me that their program worked like
CrossTalk, but was a more true VT220 emulation. If CrossTalk did a
better job of emulating the VT220, I'd just stay with it cause it
talks fine and in most of the cases is getting the job done for
me.

I expect the new software to arrive just after Christmas and I'll let
you know how things go. Reflections II is a big program that does a
lot more than I need for this application. You should see the box of
books that comes with it. The Customer Support that I mentioned is a
big concern. They were really helpful and willing to work with you
when you got them on the phone, but getting a shot at talking to them
was difficult. If everyone could have the kind of technical support
offered by WordPerfect, it would be great. I guess I'm kinda
impatient, cause when I need help, I need it now and not one or two
days later.

Chat at ya soon.

Don, thanks for the tips on looking for the special headphones.

I'll pass them on.

I've ordered SmartTerm and am waiting for it to come in. I'm gonna
send Reflections II back. It's just not worth all the trouble to get
it talking. I've spent a little over 15 hours with eyeballs close at
hnd trying to install it and make it talk. When I've called the
Technical Support, it takes 24 to 48 hours to get my call returned.
Although very helpful when you gett them on the phone, I just can't
accept that long of a wai.

73 and Merry Christmas and the best in 1991;
Steve/KC0HF
