[This is from the Silent Talk Conference]

Karen, your replies to Wayne and Anniewich may have been "long
overdue" and "rambling" as you say. But they were some of the
most interesting we've seen in a while. Please keep on posting.

I enjoyed the book reviews very much and, if you have no objection,
could I quote parts of them in our local SHHH newsletter which I
edit? I think other folks (who don't yet BBS) would be interested.

You asked about other hearing impaired computer programmers on this
echo, and the answer is yes, there are several. I'm an old retired
geezer now, but in my working days I programmed. Mostly in FORTRAN,
since it was an engineering environment, but with exposure to most
other languages as well. Believe it or not, I started this before
the advent of "stored programs", and my first computer experiences
were with machines where we "wired" the program. Most recently I
was working on large VAX based CAD systems.

KK> It's heartening to realize that you also have problems with
 KK> totally oral requests/assignments.

Karen, problems with oral information are by no means limited to
hearing impaired people. Most hearies don't know how to express
their system requirements orally. I managed a group of up to 28
engineers and technicians, all hearies except for me and one other.
We made it a policy for ALL assignments to be written, and it
avoided lots of screwups.

 KK> What does BTW mean?

BTW = By The Way

 KK> SHHH convention June 28-July 1, 1991 in Denver--that's very
KK> interesting--that's right in my town! I have just sent $15.00
KK> to SHHH to get the SHHH Journal.

The SilentTalk crew had a grand time last year at the SHHH Little
Rock convention, and are looking forward to more of the same in
Denver. At LR we had Annie, Wayne, Frank, Laurie, Roy and me, all
from this echo. As you may have seen from our posts, we are going
to try to set up something to introduce more SHHHers to BBSing, and
it would be wonderful if you could be a part of this.

Don't stay away so long next time, and have a Happy New Year!

... Jack.
