[This is from the Spinal Injury Conference]

HL> minute I am having to cancel a trip to the motor vehicle people for
HL> a "reaction time" test, hopefully the last or next to last obstacle
I remember when I tried to renew my liscense after I was injured. I
sent in t he renewal with a copy of the VA statement of completion of
drivers training with hand controls. The DMV wrote and told me had to
be tested with the hand controls. I called them up and told them that I
had been driving for about 1 year with the controls with no problem.
The DMV said I had to have the test and if I didn't, my liscense would
not be renewed. Now this was lat May and my liscense was good to end of
June. I said can I drive to the end of June. They said sure. "You
mean I am safe to drive til the end of june, then unsafe."They , of
course, said yes. Well I was ticked and temped not to go becouse the VA
upon completion of my training took us to a Va. driver's lisce se test
site and had us all with a Virginia liscense. But, then i decided to
go. I got down there.
and asked someone walking by to aszk an examiner to come out. He came
out, hoped into the car, toldme to go ahead. I started to enter the
regular drivers course. He said, on no,just drive around the outside of
the fence. When I got to the end, I askedhim were to go. He had to
look up to see were he was, the whole time he was facinated watching the
controls work, never looking outside. He said just keep following the
fence till we got back. We finally got back. I do not think he ever
loked outside at my driving. But he had to have the address of the
company making the controls. He loved them. Of couse I got my liscense
back, and I am still driving. That was in 1973.
Enjoy the test and good luck!
Regards, John
