[misc.handicap] Electronic House

[This is from the Spinal Injury Conference]

I have a nine year old child that is a complete quadraplegic
from a motor vechicle accident. (She has no movement below the
neck.)

She is very normal (and smart) in every other way, and wants to
be as active as possible in normal daily living.

I'm planning a new house with her in mind. I've read a little
about "Smart House Tech." but understand that it's really not
here, yet. I want this house be able to be retro-fitted with
this future tech. as it becomes available.

I understand that there are demos of "Smart Houses" in
existance. Does anyone know where I could see one (in the
midwest)? Can you suggest other information that I should
consider for construction?

THANKS!!! .....Ed Dobie

Ed,
I don't actually know of a house in the MidWest where you could see
that. But I do know of a system that can make a house a Smart House.
It is from Radio Shack & is called Plug 'N' Power System & works through
the house wiring with the modules that you buy at Radio Shack. If the
system you are talking about is different let me know.
                                        Happy New Year,
                                                     Robert Bowes 5th

Ed,
Ed,
Alot of option's are available aloong the lines of building (Smart Homes)
and alot is available in terms of new Construction,What you need is alot
of money which,i think would be comming from a law suit?If that is the case
a smart home would cost up to $6 million dollars.
You could contact a program run out of austrailia called Beyond 2000
which is produced by the Australlian Broadcasting Corperation, they have
done alot of show's and dedicated it towards adaptive technology. Also i
am available free of charge.I happen to be a student in NEW YORK city's
technical carier institue.I am learning disabled with Dysgraphia and dys
lexia, however in my educational process have learned the technology and
computer's offer an equalizing factor when it comes to disabilities.
What also would help is the employment of an Occupational therapist
who can help work with the designers to put together a smart home for you.
Any work done,i am sure would be highlighted on several technology programs
such as the one mentioned (BEYOND 2000) which is showed over CATV's (TDC)
better known as The Discovery Channel.

     Hope This helps..
