[Note from Bill McGarry: This file will also be available on the
Handicap News BBS within a day or so. 1-203-337-1607]
I've uploaded version 2.6 of SQWINT to Blinklink where (I assume) it'll
be available for file request.
The major improvements over previous versions are DOS funtions such as
directory listing and file copying, renaming, and deleting, as well as a
new "sentence-by-sentence" mode, which was added at a user's request.
...which brings me to my second point... A couple of users who shall
remain nameless (it was Willie and Mark) have mentioned to me that the
documentation is a little unclear in places. Many programmers have
difficulty documenting their own work (after all, we KNOW how it works).
If there's anything you don't understand - or if you have any
suggestions that would make SQWINT more useful - please let me know.
Don't worry about whether or not you've registered the program; as a
matter of fact, I would consider any such suggestions and comments the
equivalent of a registration fee.
... I got tired of the old tag line.

DS> What exactly is squint? Is it a large print program?
DS> Also, what is the name of the file?
SQWINT is a file lister, similar in nature to Vernon Buerg's
"list.exe", with the major difference being that SQWINT was
specifically written to work well with speech.
It has forward and backward search (which can be case-sensitive or
not). It has a capture routine that prints the captured text either to
a printer or to a file on disk. It has some basic DOS functions such
as file copy and delete. Eventually, it will have a file search
feature, too, so you won't have to know what directory the target file
is in.
One feature (the one I'm proudest of, because I don't think any other
file lister has it) is one that allows you to specify your editor of
choice, shell to it, edit the file, and return to SQWINT.
The file to be viewed can be selected from the command line, from an
initial prompt, of from a directory. The printer port and the ditor
pathname can be passed through the command line.
The documentation is on-line, accessible by pressing "H" (for "help").
The latest version is 2.72. The filename is "sqwnt272.zip", and it's
available on BlinkLink.
As always, I'd appreciate any user feedback. I'm not a commercial
operation, just a guy sitting in his spare room cranking out code; your
comments mean a lot to me.

Jeff, what are the major differences between sqwint, and sdir. I
remember glancing at an older version of sqwint, and thinking it
was just another sdir, and at that time did not see the advantage
of changing. This is not a cryticism, but just an inquiry. Maybe
I need to look at a newer version of sqwint. I am always looking
for helpful utilities.

Sdir is a directory listing (and quite a good one, I might add). It
has some quite sophisticated file management functions. SQWINT, on the
other hand, is a text file lister, with only minimal file management.
In other words, SQWINT is a more flexible, more practical version of
the DOS "type" command, whereas sdir is a replacement for the DOS "dir"
command.

Ok, the only problem I have with the dos type command is if I have
to stop and return to the file later.
Are you familiar with the htype command? This one allows you to
stop at any screen, and return to that screen later. It also has a
search command which I don't like because it is case sensative, and
it will not tqake you to the word you are looking for, it takes you
to the screen it is on.
Will sqwint get around some of these problems.
I also have ralph, but the only advantage I can see to it is that
it will tell me if a file is a wordperfect, or a dos file. I don't
like it's continuous read command, because once you start it, you
can't get out of it. I like to beable to stop if I wish to check
something closer.
Now, telling you this, should I take another look at the latest
sqwint.
I just don't want to duplicate utilities, and take up space on my
disk. If something is better, I can delete the old one, then I am
interested. Now, besides being partial because you wrote it, would
it behove me to check it out again.

I'm not familiar with htype. SQWINT's search command gives you the
option of a case-sensitive search, but the default is
non-case-sensitive. It does take you to the word you're looking for,
but I suspect you'd still have to re-read that entire screen.

I have been planning to make SQWINT Word Perfect compatible, but Word
Perfect wants money before they release file formatting information,
and I am not a commercial software publisher, just an impoverished
theatre artist and programmer. You can exit SQWINT's non-stop mode by
pressing "N" - the same key you press to enter that mode. There is
also a "line-by-line" mode.

WALTER! You're asking me about one of my CHILDREN!
Check it out. If it's not what you want, delete it...or give me more
suggestions so I can MAKE it waht you want.

Hi tandy,
You were asking about Sqwint vs. Ralph. I have used them both, and
Sqwint does a whole lot more than Ralph does. You can even capture and
save parts of what you are reading into a file, and the nonstop feature
can be toggled off and on during reading. I have an old version, and
the new version does even more.

Ok Jeff, here are a few suggestions for you.
1. Is it possible to have the directory listing of files a revolving one?
That is, when one gets to the end of the list when answering yes or no
to the prompt, have the program start at the top again.
Along with this, can you have the up and down arrows go up and down the
list with the same prompt read out as you go?
I have run into a rare problem with Sqwint while searching. I have
occasionally "seen" an error 14. What is the cause of this error?
It seemed to happen more when I was searching for a string with numbers
in it.
What does the error signify?
Will it be possible to speed up the search routine in the next version.
It can take forever depending upon file size.
If I have more, I'll let you know.

That's a good idea idea. I'll do it.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking here. Which list?
WZ> I have run into a rare problem with Sqwint while searching. I
WZ> have occasionally "seen" an error 14. What is the cause of

WZ> It's an internal error. I don't know why you're getting it, but
I'll sure try to find out.
WZ> Will it be possible to speed up the search routine in the next

That's the very FIRST thing I did when I started working on the new
version. It's much faster now.

TW> I do not know first person but two people have told me that
TW> your i for interupt doesn't work
You've mentioned that before and I'm a little mystified, because the
"I" key only speaks file information (the length, current
pointer positon, etc). There IS no "interrupt" feature. Would it be
possible for you to netmail me their numbers so I can ask them
directly?
Evening numbers, if possible, please. Thanks.
