Index Number: 13149 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] i attended the ninth annual perspectives on employment of persons with disabilities conference sponsered by various federal government agencies and the third annual department of defense (dod) forum. a few important pieces of info from these events include a total exemption to the dod hiring freeze, a new cap fund to purchase equipment for dod employees, and an intesting video tape. as of late november there is an exemption to the hiring freeze for people with severe disabilities which includes the 9 targeted disaabilities. a new member of the higher level dod staff got this exemption aproved. one problem is the specific defense agency has to work out slots and budget arangements but a person will be able to make a case to be hired. second, there is a new group set up and funded with 10.7 million through fiscal year 94 to purchase equipment for reasonable accomodation within the department of defense (dod). the acronym is cap and my memory is this stands for computer electronic accomodation program. they are located at the skyline facility in northern va and currently have 3 employees. they say they will hire a computer specialist in the near future. third, the ibm support center and others have issued a goood short video tape showing managers, disabled employees, and their accomodations. this briefly shows people at work and i think would help in convincing a firm to hire a disabled person. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!129!89.0!Peter.Brown Internet: Peter.Brown@p0.f89.n129.z1.fidonet.org
