Marc Maurer, President
National Federation of the Blind
1800 Johnson St.
Baltimore, MD 21230

An Open Letter to Marc Maurer,
President of the National Federation of the Blind:

I received your letter of November 27, 1990 in which you
informed me that the Board of Directors of the National
Federation of the Blind had voted to expel me as a member at a
meeting on November 24, 1990. The Board resolution you enclosed
documents this motion and the reasons for it.

I dispute the charges cited as constitutional grounds for my
expulsion. I find each charge to be simply untrue, grossly
distorted, or irrelevant to the matter in question. Therefore,
because I continue to believe in the philosophy of blindness
promoted by the National Federation of the Blind, and because I
continue to believe in the value of organized, collective action
seeking the realization of this philosophy in society, I now
state my intention to be re-instated as a member by a vote of
the membership of the National Federation of the Blind, meeting
at a national convention.

The constitution of the National Federation of the Blind
guarantees me the right to present my case before a convention of
the national body. It reads in part as follows:

If a dispute arises as to whether there was "good
cause" or whether the board made a "good faith effort,"
the national convention, acting in its capacity as the
supreme authority of the Federation, shall have the
power to make final disposition of the matter.

So that the membership of the National Federation of the
Blind may make a fully informed decision about my re-instatement,
I hereby request that the following information channels and
public forums be made available to me, as they and others already
are to the national board which supports my expulsion as a
member. List of Names and Addresses of All NFB Officers

In order to have a reasonable opportunity to campaign for my
own case, I hereby request a list--to be received by January, 31,
1991--of the names and addresses of every national, state, and
local officer of the National Federation of the Blind. I am
willing to pay, if necessary, a reasonable cost for the
production of this list.
