HK> Howdy Carla, You might try talking to Chance when you are in
 HK> an area where
HK> you can anticipate a sharp sound. I know you can't guess when
HK> a truck is going to backfire, but just reassuring him while
HK> walking down the street might help.

Thanks, Henry-- I have been trying to do just that. Thankfully even
backfires don't bother him-- it is just the 'crack' noise like a gun report
or bubble paper... or fireworks. He survived New Years' Eve, however, only
crawling under the furniture once. I imagine Fort Hood would give him
cardiac arrest, though! It is really odd-- that one pitch and quality of
sound gets him, while a 'bang' or 'boom' or even 'crash' doesn't phase him.
I just feel badly that I did not notice whatever incident caused the
original fear, if it was really triggered by real fear and not some sort of
canine phobia. Luckily, we do not encounter many such noises in a working
situation, so it is not a particularly dangerous problem.. simply
disturbing.

We're working on it, though... a little bubble-paper-popping therapy (I sit
and pop the stuff while we're hanging around in the house and we watch him
for reactions, doing it just as much as he can take and no more... seems
to be helping a little.

HK> Falcon when straight up about 40 feet and I was not far behind.
HK> He still goes to Fort
HK> Hood with me, but he is not too crazy about me taking him out
 HK> on those tank
 HK> trails.

haha! I can't blame poor Falcon! I would be more than a little reluctant to
do that again. Chance may not be much bothered by bangs and booms, but _I_
am!

HK> patient and understanding, after all, he does have to put up
 HK> with a lot.

The understatement of the year! Chance has lived with me
for seven and a half years. If my fiance can stand it that long without
going crazier, I will be surprised. <grin> Fortunately, sanity is not high
on my priority list of "things I like in people (oer dogs)".
