Linda, that word compatible is the thing.  I think from the way
different companies say compatible has a wide range of meaning.  It
is not a duplicate.  That has to tell you something.  While a hayes
compatible will work for the most part like a hayes, there can be
something different.  One example, Donna just bought a new avetex,
which is suppose to be hayes compatible, but you can not set the
speed of the dialing tones.  That is one example.  As far as speech
isconcerned, I have never found a modem that had a problem with
speech since it is the software that would have to work with
speech.
