Not only are poor signing skills a liability, but also written 
communication can be misunderstood.
  
Some years ago I visited a patient in Harlem Hospital in NYC.  He showed 
me the notepad which he used to communicate with the doctors and nurses.
 
They had asked him, "Did you move your bowels today?"  He did not 
understand that sentence.  (For many deaf people, English is not their 
primary language.)  
  
So, I signed to him, "Did you sh-t?"
